What are the possible side effects of Acetaminophen/codeine phosphate?
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Seek emergency medical attention if a child taking this medication has any of the following life-threatening side effects: noisy breathing, sighing, slow breathing with long pauses between breaths; being unusually sleepy or hard to wake up; blue colored lips.
In rare cases, acetaminophen may cause a severe skin reaction that can be fatal. This could occur even if you have taken acetaminophen in the past and had no reaction. Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away if you have skin redness or a rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling. If you have this type of reaction, you should never again take any medicine that contains acetaminophen.
Call your doctor at once if you have:

shallow breathing, slow heartbeat;
-
a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
-
confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior;
-
seizure (convulsions);
-
easy bruising or bleeding; or
-
nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Common side effects include:

upset stomach, constipation;

blurred vision; or
-
dry mouth.

- Difficult or troubled breathing
- irregular, fast or slow, or shallow breathing
- pale or blue lips, fingernails, or skin
- shortness of breath
- Black, tarry stools
- bleeding gums
- blood in the urine or stools
- cough or hoarseness
- difficulty with swallowing
- dizziness
- fast heartbeat
- fever with or without chills
- general feeling of tiredness or weakness
- hives
- itching
- lower back or side pain
- painful or difficult urination
- pinpoint red spots on the skin
- puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
- skin rash
- sore throat
- sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or in the mouth
- tightness in the chest
- unusual bleeding or bruising
- unusual tiredness or weakness
If any of the following symptoms of overdose occur while taking acetaminophen / codeine, get emergency help immediately:

- Abdominal or stomach pain
- bloody or cloudy urine
- chills
- constricted, pinpoint, or small pupils (black part of the eye)
- convulsions
- dark urine
- headache
- increased sweating
- light-colored stools
- loss of appetite
- loss of consciousness
- nausea
- sudden decrease in amount of urine
- unpleasant breath odor
- vomiting
- vomiting of blood
- yellow eyes or skin
Minor Side Effects
Some of the side effects that can occur with acetaminophen / codeine may not need medical attention. As your body adjusts to the medicine during treatment these side effects may go away. Your health care professional may also be able to tell you about ways to reduce or prevent some of these side effects. If any of the following side effects continue, are bothersome or if you have any questions about them, check with your health care professional:

- Drowsiness
- lightheadedness
- relaxed and calm
- sleepiness
- Difficulty having a bowel movement (stool)
- false or unusual sense of well-being
What is the most important information I should know about Acetaminophen/codeine phosphate?
You should not use this medicine if you have recently used alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, or other narcotic medications.
Medicines that contain codeine should not be given to a child just after surgery to remove the tonsils or adenoids.
Do not use this medicine if you have taken an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.
Do not take more of this medication than is recommended. An overdose of acetaminophen can damage your liver or cause death. Call your doctor if this medication causes upper stomach pain, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), severe drowsiness, weakness, or very slow breathing.
In rare cases, acetaminophen may cause a severe skin reaction. Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away if you have skin redness or a rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling.
Acetaminophen/codeine phosphate contraindications
Acetaminophen/codeine phosphate phosphate tablets are contraindicated in patients with:

- Significant respiratory depression

- Acute or severe bronchial asthma in an unmonitored setting or in the absence of resuscitative equipment
Codeine-containing products are contraindicated for postoperative pain management in children who have undergone tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy.
This product should not be administered to patients who have previously exhibited hypersensitivity to codeine or acetaminophen.
