Albuked 25 warnings
Hypersensitivity
Hypersensitivity or allergic reactions have been observed, and may in some cases progress to severe anaphylaxis. Epinephrine should be available immediately to treat any acute hypersensitivity reaction.
Hypervolemia/Hemodilution
Hypervolemia may occur if the dosage and rate of infusion are not adjusted to the patient’s volume status. At the first clinical signs of possible cardiovascular overload, e.g., headache, dyspnea, increased blood pressure, jugular venous distention, elevated central venous pressure, pulmonary edema, the infusion should be stopped immediately and the patient reevaluated. Albuked 25 should be used with caution in conditions where hypervolemia and its consequences or hemodilution could represent a special risk for the patient. Examples of such conditions are:
- Decompensated cardiac insufficiency
- Hypertension
- Esophageal varices
- Pulmonary edema
- Hemorrhagic diathesis
- Severe anemia
- Renal and post-renal anuria.
20-25% Albuked 25 (Human) is relatively low in electrolytes compared to the 4-5% Albuked 25 (Human) solutions. When Albuked 25 is given, monitor the electrolyte status of the patient and take appropriate steps to restore or maintain the electrolyte balance.
Coagulation Abnormalities
If comparatively large volumes are to be replaced, monitoring of coagulation and hematocrit is necessary. Ensure adequate substitution of other blood constituents (coagulation factors, electrolytes, platelets and erythrocytes).
Laboratory Monitoring
If Albuked 25 (Human) 20% is to be administered, monitor hemodynamic performance regularly; this may include:
- Arterial blood pressure and pulse rate
- Central venous pressure
- Pulmonary artery occlusion pressure
- Urine output
- Electrolytes
- Hematocrit/hemoglobin.
Albuked 25 (Human) 20% must not be diluted with sterile water for injection as this may cause hemolysis in recipients.
Infection Risk from Human Plasma
This product is a derivative of human plasma. Based on effective donor screening and product manufacturing processes it carries an extremely remote risk for transmission of viral diseases. A theoretical risk for transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) also is considered extremely remote. No cases of transmission of viral diseases or CJD have been identified for Albuked 25 (Human) 20%.
What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Albuked 25?
You should not use Albuked 25 if you are allergic to it, or if you have:
-
severe anemia (lack of red blood cells); or
-
severe heart failure.
If possible before you receive Albuked 25, tell your doctor if you have:
-
anemia;
-
heart disease, high blood pressure;
-
bleeding or blood clotting disorder such as hemophilia;
-
lung problems;
-
kidney disease;
-
a latex allergy; or
-
if you are unable to urinate.
In an emergency situation it may not be possible to tell your caregivers about your health conditions. Make sure any doctor caring for you afterward knows you have received this medicine.
Albuked 25 is made from human plasma (part of the blood) which may contain viruses and other infectious agents. Donated plasma is tested and treated to reduce the risk of it containing infectious agents, but there is still a small possibility it could transmit disease. Talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of using this medication.
FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether Albuked 25 will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medicine.
It is not known whether Albuked 25 passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Albuked 25 precautions
General
Patients should always be monitored carefully in order to guard against the possibility of circulatory overload. Albuked 25 25 is hyperoncotic, therefore, in the presence of dehydration, Albuked 25 must be given with or followed by addition of fluids.(4)
In hemorrhage the administration of Albuked 25 should be supplemented by the transfusion of whole blood to treat the relative anemia associated with hemodilution.(8) When circulating blood volume has been reduced, hemodilution following the administration of Albuked 25 persists for many hours. In patients with a normal blood volume, hemodilution lasts for a much shorter period.(4,9,10)
The rapid rise in blood pressure which may follow the administration of a colloid with positive oncotic activity necessitates careful observation to detect and treat severed blood vessels which may not have bled at the lower blood pressure.
Drug Interactions
Albuked 25 25 is compatible with whole blood, packed red cells, as well as the standard carbohydrate and electrolyte solutions intended for intravenous use. It should, however, not be mixed with protein hydrolysates, amino acid solutions nor those containing alcohol.
Pregnancy
Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with Albuked 25 25. It is also not known whether Albuked 25 25 can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. Albuked 25 25 should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed.
Pediatric Use
Safety and effectiveness in the pediatric population have not been established.
What happens if I miss a dose of Albuked 25?
Because you will receive Albuked 25 in a clinical setting, you are not likely to miss a dose.
