Description: Alerfree is an alkylamine derivative with histamine H1-receptor antagonist effects. It also has anticholinergic and moderate sedative effects.
Onset: 15-20 min (oral).
Pharmacokinetics:
Absorption: Readily absorbed from the GI tract. Peak plasma concentrations in 1-2.5 hr.
Metabolism: Metabolised to N-desmethylpheniramine and N-didesmethylpheniramine.
Excretion: Via urine (as unchanged drug and metabolites). Terminal half-life: 8-17 hr (IV Alerfree maleate); 16-19 hr (oral).
Alerfree administration
Should be taken with food. Take after meals.
Alerfree pharmacology
Alerfree is an antihistamine used to treat allergic conditions such as hay fever or urticaria. It is generally sold in combination with other medications, rather than as a stand-alone drug. Allergies are caused by an excessive type 1 hypersensitivity response of the body to allergens, mediated by inappropriate histamine signalling. By inhibiting the binding of histamine, antihistamines decrease the normal histamine response from cells, consequently decreasing allergic symptoms.
