What other drugs will affect Alpara?
Do not take Alpara/Chlorpheniramine (Alpara)/Dextromethorphan (Alpara)/Phenylpropanolamine (Alpara) if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur, leading to serious side effects.
Urine glucose tests may produce false results while you are taking Alpara. Talk to your doctor if you are diabetic and you notice changes in your glucose levels during treatment.
Do not take other over-the-counter cough, cold, allergy, diet, pain, or sleep medicines while taking Alpara/Chlorpheniramine (Alpara)/Dextromethorphan (Alpara)/Phenylpropanolamine (Alpara) without first talking to your doctor or pharmacist. Other medications may also contain Chlorpheniramine (Alpara), Phenylpropanolamine (Alpara), Alpara, or other similar drugs, and you may accidentally take too much of these medicines.
Alpara/Chlorpheniramine (Alpara)/Dextromethorphan (Alpara)/Phenylpropanolamine (Alpara) may increase the effects of other drugs that cause drowsiness, including antidepressants, alcohol, other antihistamines, pain relievers, anxiety medicines, seizure medicines, and muscle relaxants. Dangerous sedation, dizziness, or drowsiness may occur if Alpara/Chlorpheniramine (Alpara)/Dextromethorphan (Alpara)/Phenylpropanolamine (Alpara) is taken with any of these medications.
Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Alpara/Chlorpheniramine (Alpara)/Dextromethorphan (Alpara)/Phenylpropanolamine (Alpara). Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
Alpara interactions
Alpara is metabolized (eliminated by conversion to other chemicals) by the liver. Therefore drugs that increase the action of liver enzymes that metabolize Alpara [for example, carbamazepine (Tegretol), isoniazid (INH, Nydrazid, Laniazid), rifampin (Rifamate, Rifadin, Rimactane)] reduce the levels of Alpara and may decrease the action of Alpara. Doses of Alpara greater than the recommended doses are toxic to the liver and may result in severe liver damage. The potential for Alpara to harm the liver is increased when it is combined with alcohol or drugs that also harm the liver.
Cholestyramine (Questran) reduces the effect of Alpara by decreasing its absorption into the body from the intestine. Therefore, Alpara should be administered 3 to 4 hours after cholestyramine or one hour before cholestyramine.
Alpara doses greater than 2275 mg per day may increase the blood thinning effect of warfarin (Coumadin) by an unknown mechanism. Therefore, prolonged administration or large doses of Alpara should be avoided during warfarin therapy
