What are the possible side effects of Excedrin Extra Strength?
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction to Excedrin Extra Strength: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
In rare cases, Acetaminophen (Excedrin Extra Strength) may cause a severe skin reaction that can be fatal. This could occur even if you have taken Acetaminophen (Excedrin Extra Strength) in the past and had no reaction. Stop taking Excedrin Extra Strength and call your doctor right away if you have skin redness or a rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling. If you have this type of reaction, you should never again take any medicine that contains Acetaminophen (Excedrin Extra Strength).
Stop using Excedrin Extra Strength and call your doctor at once if you have:
-
severe anxiety, agitation, confusion, panic;
-
easy bruising or bleeding;
-
a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
-
if you feel very thirsty or hot, are unable to urinate, and have heavy sweating or hot and dry skin;
-
symptoms of stomach bleeding - bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds;
-
high potassium - slow heart rate, weak pulse, muscle weakness, tingly feeling; or
-
liver problems - nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Common Excedrin Extra Strength side effects may include:

upset stomach, heartburn;
-
depressed mood, feeling anxious or restless; or
-
sleep problems (insomnia).

Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, trouble falling asleep, or a shaky/nervous feeling may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
If your doctor has directed you to use this medication, remember that he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
Stop taking this medication and tell your doctor right away if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: severe dizziness, fainting, persistent or worsening stomach pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, black/bloody stools, ringing in the ears, loss of hearing, irregular/fast heartbeat, signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine), signs of infection (e.g., persistent sore throat or fever), easy bruising/bleeding.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

What is the most important information I should know about Excedrin Extra Strength?
- Excedrin Extra Strength has Acetaminophen (Excedrin Extra Strength), Aspirin (Excedrin Extra Strength), and Caffeine (Excedrin Extra Strength) in it. Before you start any new medicine, check the label to see if it has Acetaminophen (Excedrin Extra Strength), Aspirin (Excedrin Extra Strength), or Caffeine (Excedrin Extra Strength) in it too. If it does or if you are not sure, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Contact your doctor right away if you take more than 4,000 mg of Acetaminophen (Excedrin Extra Strength) per day, even if you feel well.
- Excedrin Extra Strength may harm your liver. Your risk may be greater if you drink alcohol while you are using Excedrin Extra Strength. Talk to your doctor before you take Excedrin Extra Strength or other fever reducers if you drink alcohol.
- A very bad skin reaction (Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis) may happen. It can cause very bad health problems that may not go away and sometimes death. Get medical help right away if you have signs like red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin (with or without fever); red or irritated eyes; or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, or eyes.
- Do not take more than the dose recommended by your doctor or the package labeling. If you take more than recommended, your risk of severely harming your liver may be increased. If you are not sure how much medicine you may take, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
- Aspirin (Excedrin Extra Strength) has been linked to a serious illness called Reye syndrome. Do not give Excedrin Extra Strength to a child or teenager who has or is recovering from the flu, chickenpox, or a viral infection. Contact your doctor with any questions or concerns.
- Avoid large amounts of food or drink that have Caffeine (Excedrin Extra Strength) (eg, coffee, tea, cocoa, cola, chocolate). This includes any medicines that contain Caffeine (Excedrin Extra Strength). Too much Caffeine (Excedrin Extra Strength) may cause nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness, or fast heartbeat.
- Serious stomach ulcers or bleeding can occur with the use of Excedrin Extra Strength. Taking it in high doses or for a long time, smoking, or drinking alcohol increases the risk of these side effects. Taking Excedrin Extra Strength with food will NOT reduce the risk of these effects. Contact your doctor or emergency room at once if you develop severe stomach or back pain; black, tarry stools; vomit that looks like blood or coffee grounds; or unusual weight gain or swelling.
- Excedrin Extra Strength may reduce the number of clot-forming cells (platelets) in your blood. Avoid activities that may cause bruising or injury. Tell your doctor if you have unusual bruising or bleeding. Tell your doctor if you have dark, tarry, or bloody stools.
- Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Excedrin Extra Strength before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
- Do not take Excedrin Extra Strength for at least 7 days after any surgery unless directed by your health care provider.
- If your pain does not get better or becomes worse, or if you have a fever that becomes worse or lasts for more than 3 days, contact your doctor.
- Excedrin Extra Strength may cause false results with some in-home test kits for blood cholesterol. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking Excedrin Extra Strength and need to check your blood cholesterol at home.
- Use Excedrin Extra Strength with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects.
- Different brands of Excedrin Extra Strength may have different dosing instructions for CHILDREN. Follow the dosing instructions on the package labeling. If your doctor has given you instructions, follow those. If you are unsure of the dose to give a child, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
- PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Excedrin Extra Strength while you are pregnant. Excedrin Extra Strength is not recommended during the last 3 months (third trimester) of pregnancy. It may cause injury to the fetus. Excedrin Extra Strength is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Excedrin Extra Strength, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.
Excedrin Extra Strength contraindications
This medicaion should not be given to a child or teenager who has a fever, especially if the child also has flu symptoms or chicken pox. Aspirin (Excedrin Extra Strength) in this medicine can cause a serious and sometimes fatal condition called Reye’s syndrome in children. You should not use this if you are allergic to Acetaminophen (Excedrin Extra Strength) (Tylenol), Aspirin (Excedrin Extra Strength), or Caffeine (Excedrin Extra Strength), or if you have:
a recent history of stomach or intestinal bleeding;
liver disease;
asthma or severe allergic reaction caused by taking Aspirin (Excedrin Extra Strength) or a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), especially "Aspirin (Excedrin Extra Strength) triad syndrome"; or
if you are allergic to an NSAID such as Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Orudis, Indocin, Lodine, Voltaren, Toradol, Mobic, Relafen, Feldene, and others.
Ask a doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to take this medicine if you have:
asthma or seasonal allergies;
fever with a stiff neck;
a stomach ulcer, heartburn, or stomach pain;
a bleeding or blood clotting disorder such as hemophilia;
diabetes; or
gout.
