Side effects of Galtaren in details

The following serious adverse reactions are discussed in greater detail in other sections of the labeling:

Clinical Trials Experience

Because clinical trials are conducted under widely varying conditions, adverse reaction rates observed in the clinical trials of a drug cannot be directly compared with rates in the clinical trials of another drug and may not reflect the rates observed in practice.

The safety of a single dose of Galtaren was evaluated in 2 placebo-controlled trials with a total of 634 migraine patients treated with Galtaren for a single migraine headache. Following treatment with Galtaren potassium (either Galtaren or Galtaren potassium immediate-release tablets [as a control]), 5 subjects (0.8%) withdrew from the studies; following placebo exposure, 1 subject (0.2%) withdrew.

The most common adverse reactions (i.e., that occurred in 1% or more of Galtaren-treated patients) and more frequent with Galtaren than with placebo were nausea and dizziness.

Dizziness 1% 0.5%

The most common adverse events resulting in discontinuation of patients following Galtaren dosing in controlled clinical trials were urticaria (0.2%) and flushing (0.2%). No withdrawals were due to a serious reaction.

Postmarketing Experience

The following adverse reactions have been identified during post approval use of Galtaren or other NSAIDs. Because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to drug exposure.

The use of high dose Galtaren (150 mg/day) for >4 weeks is contraindicated in patients with established cardiovascular disease (congestive heart failure, established ischemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease) or uncontrolled hypertension.

Established Cardiovascular Disease or Significant Cardiovascular Risk Factors: The use of high dose Galtaren (150mg/day) for >4 weeks is contraindicated in patients with established cardiovascular disease (congestive heart failure, established ischemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease) or uncontrolled hypertension. If Galtaren treatment is needed, patients with established cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension or significant cardiovascular risk factors (eg, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes mellitus and smoking) should be treated only after careful consideration and at doses ≤100 mg daily if the treatment is for >4 weeks. As the cardiovascular risks of Galtaren may increase with dose and duration of exposure, Galtaren should always be prescribed at the lowest effective daily dose and for the shortest duration possible.

Renal Impairment: Galtaren is contraindicated in patients with renal failure. No specific studies have been carried out in patients with renal impairment, therefore, no specific dose adjustment recommendations can be made. Caution is advised when administering Galtaren to patients with mild to moderate renal impairment.

Hepatic Impairment: Galtaren is contraindicated in patients with hepatic failure. No specific studies have been carried out in patients with hepatic impairment, therefore, no specific dose adjustment recommendations can be made. Caution is advised when administering Galtaren to patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment.
