What are the possible side effects of Kodin?

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Kodin and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:

• an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); or

• confusion, hallucinations, or unusual behavior.

Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Kodin and talk to your doctor if you experience

• dizziness, drowsiness, or sleepiness;

• restlessness or irritability;

• blurred vision;

• constipation;

• dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, or decreased appetite;

• muscle twitches;

• sweating; or

• itching.

Codeine (Kodin) may be habit forming. Physical and/or psychological dependence can occur, and withdrawal effects are possible if the medication is stopped suddenly after prolonged or high-dose treatment. Do not stop taking Kodin suddenly without first talking to your doctor if you have been taking it continuously for more than 5 to 7 days. Your doctor may want to gradually reduce the dose.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Side effects of Kodin in details

Adverse reactions listed below have been reported in the literature for Codeine (Kodin) and Chlorpheniramine (Kodin) and may be expected to occur with Kodin. Also included are events which occurred during clinical pharmacokinetic studies (in a total of 147 healthy adult volunteers with either single or multiple dose exposure) with Kodin and judged by the investigator to be related to study treatment. There are insufficient data to support a statement regarding distribution of adverse events by gender, race and age.

Body as a Whole

Asthenia, feeling of relaxation, redness or flushing of the face, unusual tiredness or weakness.

Allergic

Allergic laryngospasm, atelectasis, bronchospastic allergic reaction, hives, itching, swelling of face.

Cardiovascular

Fast, slow, or pounding heartbeat, hypertension, hypotension, orthostatic hypotension, palpitation, shock-like state, syncope.

Dermatologic System

Dermatitis, excessive perspiration, urticaria, erythema, pruritus, rash.

Endocrine

Changes in glucose utilization, decreased lactation, early menses, glycosuria, gynecomastia, hypoglycemia, increased appetite, increased libido, pheochromocytoma stimulation.

Gastrointestinal

Abdominal distension, abdominal pain, acute pancreatitis, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, dyspepsia, epigastric distress, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting; also observed with opioids: decreased gastric motility with increased likelihood of esophageal reflux.

Genitourinary

Dysuria, irritative bladder symptoms, urinary frequency, urinary hesitancy, urinary retention, ureteral spasm.

Nervous System

Blurred, double, or other visual disturbances; confusion; dizziness; depression; drowsiness and sedation; headache; euphoria; facial dyskinesia; false sense of well-being; feeling faint, lightheadedness, general feeling of discomfort or illness; may cause excitability, especially in children; nervousness, agitation and restlessness; minimal sedation; somnolence; also observed with antihistamine agents: insomnia, dyskinesia, irritability, tremor.

Respiratory System

Dryness of pharynx and respiratory passages, laryngismus, nasal stuffiness, wheezing or troubled breathing, respiratory depression.

Special Senses

Ears: labyrinthitis, tinnitus, vertigo; eyes: blurred vision, diplopia, hypermetropia, lacrimation increased, mydriasis, photophobia.

Other

Drug fever.

What is the most important information I should know about Kodin?

• Kodin may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Kodin with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
• Do not drink alcohol or use medicines that may cause drowsiness (eg, sleep aids, muscle relaxers) while you are using Kodin; it may add to their effects. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines may cause drowsiness.
• Kodin may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting; alcohol, hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects.
• Do not use Kodin for a cough with a lot of mucus. Do not use it for a long-term cough (eg, caused by asthma, emphysema, smoking). However, you may use it for these conditions if your doctor tells you to.
• Kodin has Chlorpheniramine (Kodin) in it. Before you start any new medicine, check the label to see if it has Chlorpheniramine (Kodin) in it too. If it does or if you are not sure, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
• Do NOT take more than the recommended dose or use for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor.
• If your cough or other symptoms persist for more than 5 days or come back, or if you also have fever, rash, or persistent headache, check with your doctor.
• Kodin may interfere with skin allergy tests. If you are scheduled for a skin test, talk to your doctor. You may need to stop taking Kodin for a few days before the tests.
• Kodin may cause you to become sunburned more easily. Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Kodin. Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time.
• Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Kodin before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
• Use Kodin with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, low blood pressure, excitability, dry mouth, and trouble urinating.
• Caution is advised when using Kodin in CHILDREN; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially excitability.
• Kodin should not be used in CHILDREN younger than 6 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Kodin while you are pregnant. Do not take Kodin if you are in the third trimester of pregnancy. It is not known if Kodin is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Kodin.

When used for long periods of time or at high doses, Kodin may not work as well and may require higher doses to obtain the same effect as when originally taken. This is known as TOLERANCE. Talk with your doctor if Kodin stops working well. Do not take more than prescribed.

When used for long periods of time or at high doses, some people develop a need to continue taking Kodin. This is known as DEPENDENCE or addiction.

If you suddenly stop taking Kodin, you may experience WITHDRAWAL symptoms including anxiety; diarrhea; fever, runny nose, or sneezing; goose bumps and abnormal skin sensations; nausea; vomiting; pain; rigid muscles; rapid heartbeat; seeing, hearing or feeling things that are not there; shivering or tremors; sweating; trouble sleeping.

Kodin contraindications

Patients with hypersensitivity or idiosyncrasy to any of its ingredients. Do not use in newborn infants, premature infants, in nursing mothers, in patients with severe hypertension, severe coronary artery disease, ischemic heart disease, or in those receiving monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors. Kodin Liquid should not be used during pregnancy or in nursing mothers.

Antihistamines are contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, peptic ulcer, and during an asthma attack. Antihistamines should not be used to treat lower respiratory tract conditions including asthma.
