What should I avoid while taking Kofzero DC?

Kofzero DC and Codeine (Kofzero DC) may impair your thinking or reactions. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medicine will affect you. Dizziness or severe drowsiness can cause falls or other accidents.

Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall.

Do not drink alcohol while you are taking medicine that contains Codeine (Kofzero DC). Dangerous side effects or death can occur when alcohol is combined with a narcotic medicine.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using any other cold, cough, allergy, or sleep medicine. Antihistamines and cough suppressants are contained in many combination medicines. Taking certain products together can cause you to get too much of a certain drug. Check the label to see if a medicine contains an antihistamine or cough suppressant.

Respiratory Depression

Kofzero DC is not recommended for use in pediatric patients under 6 years of age. Pediatric patients under 2 years of age may be more susceptible to the respiratory depressant effects of Codeine (Kofzero DC), including respiratory arrest, coma, and death.

As with other opioids, Codeine (Kofzero DC) produces dose-related respiratory depression by directly acting on brain stem respiratory centers. Codeine (Kofzero DC) affects the center that controls respiratory rhythm, and may produce irregular and periodic breathing. Caution should be exercised when Kofzero DC is used postoperatively, in patients with pulmonary disease or shortness of breath, or whenever ventilatory function is depressed. If respiratory depression occurs, it may be antagonized by the use of naloxone hydrochloride and other supportive measures when indicated.

Head Injury and Increased Intracranial Pressure

Respiratory depressant effects of opioids and their capacity to elevate cerebrospinal fluid pressure may be markedly exaggerated in the presence of head injury, other intracranial lesions or a pre-existing increase in intracranial pressure. Furthermore, opioids produce adverse reactions which may obscure the clinical course of patients with head injuries.

Acute Abdominal Conditions

Administration of opioids may obscure the diagnosis or clinical course of patients with acute abdominal conditions.

Obstructive Bowel Disease

Chronic use of opioids may result in obstructive bowel disease especially in patients with underlying intestinal motility disorder.

Respiratory Conditions

Kofzero DC should be used with caution in patients with persistent or chronic cough such as occurs with smoking, asthma, or emphysema, or with cough accompanied by excessive phlegm. In patients with asthma or pulmonary emphysema, the indiscriminate use of antitussives may precipitate respiratory insufficiency due to increased viscosity of bronchial secretions and suppression of the cough reflex. In addition, the anticholinergic activity of antihistamines might reduce the volume and cause thickening of bronchial secretions and thus result in obstruction of the respiratory passages. Benefit to risk ratio should be carefully considered especially in pediatric patients with respiratory embarrassment (e.g., croup).

General

Before prescribing medication to suppress or modify cough, it is important to ascertain that the underlying cause of cough is identified, that modification of cough does not increase the risk of clinical or physiologic complications, and that appropriate therapy for the primary disease is provided. Because of its sympathomimetic component Kofzero DC Liquid should be used with caution in patients with diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, or thyroid disease.

Information for Patients

Patients should be warned about engaging in activities requiring mental alertness and motor coordination, such as driving a car or operating machinery. Patients should be cautioned to get up slowly from a lying or sitting position and to lie down if nausea occurs.

Drug Interactions

Patients receiving other narcotic analgesics, anti-psychotics, anti-anxiety agents, or other CNS depressants (including alcohol) concomitantly with this drug may exhibit an additive CNS depression. When such combined therapy is contemplated, the dose of one or both agents should be reduced. The concurrent use of anticholinergics with Codeine (Kofzero DC) may produce paralytic ileums. MAO inhibitors prolong and intensify the anticholinergic effects of antihistamines. Antihistamines may have additive effects with alcohol and other CNS depressants, e.g., hypnotics, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti-anxiety agents.

Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility

Animal studies of Kofzero DC Liquid to assess the carcinogenic and mutagenic potential to the effect on fertility have not been performed.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy Category C

Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with Kofzero DC Liquid. It is also not known whether Kofzero DC Liquid can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. Kofzero DC Liquid should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed.

Nursing Mothers

Kofzero DC Liquid is contraindicated in nursing mothers.

Pediatric Use

Not recommended for use in patients under 6 years of age.

Geriatric Use

The elderly (60 years of age or older) are more likely to exhibit adverse reactions. Caution should be taken when prescribing this drug to the elderly.

What happens if I miss a dose of Kofzero DC?

Since this medicine is taken when needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are taking the medicine regularly, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
