Dosage of Megacillin in details
Adults: 250-500 mg every 6 hrs.
Children: Suggested dosage for infants and children is 50 mg/kg body weight/day in 4 divided doses. To be given every 6 hrs.
Children 7-12 years: 5-10 mL (1-2 tsp) of Megacillin 250 mg/5 mL; 3-6 years: 5-10 mL (1-2 tsp) of Megacillin 125 mg/5 mL or 5 mL (1 tsp) of Megacillin 250 mg/5 mL; 1-2 years: 5 mL (1 tsp) of Megacillin 125 mg/5 mL or 2.5-5 mL of Megacillin 250 mg/5 mL.
Usual duration of therapy is from 10-14 days. Or as prescribed by the physician.
Megacillin interactions
Megacillin should not be combined with bacteriostatic antibiotics. Combinations with other antibiotics should be considered if their effects can be expected to be synergistic or at least additive. The combination partners should be fully dosed. (Exception: In combination with a proven synergistic action, the dose of the more toxic combination partner may be reduced.) Competitive inhibition of drug elimination should be remembered, whenever anti-inflammatories, antirheumatics, antipyretics (particularly indomethacin, phenylbutazone, salicylates in high doses) or probenecid are used concomitantly. Ingestion of Megacillin with meals reduce the absorption of the drug. Like other antibiotics, Megacillin may reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives. During treatment with Megacillin non-enzymatic urinary glucose tests and uribilinogen tests may be false-positive. Urinary amino acid quantitations with ninhydrin may also be false-positive.
