What are the possible side effects of Minims Saline?

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using Minims Saline flush and call your doctor at once if you have any of these side effects while using the flush:

• severe irritation;

• swelling;

• warmth;

• redness;

• oozing; or

• pain.

Common side effects may include:

• cold feeling or mild burning; or

• mild irritation around the catheter.

Post-Marketing Adverse Reactions

The following adverse reactions have been identified during postapproval use of Minims Saline Injection, USP. Because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to drug exposure.

The following adverse reactions have been reported in the post-marketing experience during use of 0.9% Minims Saline Injection, USP and include the following:

hypersensitivity/infusion reactions, including hypotension, pyrexia, tremor, chills, urticaria, rash, and pruritus.

Also reported are infusion site reactions, such as infusion site erythema, injection site streaking, burning sensation, and infusion site urticaria.

The following adverse reactions have not been reported with 0.9% Minims Saline Injection, USP but may occur: hypernatremia, hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, and hyponatremia, which may be symptomatic.

Hyponatremia has been reported for 0.45% Minims Saline Injection, USP.

The following adverse reactions have not been reported with 0.45% Minims Saline Injection, USP but may occur: hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, hypersensitivity/infusion reactions (including hypotension, pyrexia, tremor, chills, urticaria, rash, and pruritus), and infusion site reactions (such as infusion site erythema, injection site streaking, burning sensation, infusion site urticaria).

If an adverse reaction does occur, discontinue the infusion, evaluate the patient, institute appropriate therapeutic countermeasures and save the remainder of the fluid for examination if deemed necessary.

What is the most important information I should know about Minims Saline?

• Misuse of Minims Saline may be harmful. Be sure you know how to properly use Minims Saline. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
• In a hot environment it is necessary to have adequate hydration and balanced electrolyte replacement.
• Do NOT take more than the recommended dose or use for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor.
• Lab tests, including electrolyte levels, may be performed while you use Minims Saline. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• Minims Saline should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Minims Saline while you are pregnant. It is not known if Minims Saline is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Minims Saline, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Minims Saline contraindications

Due to potential toxicity of benzyl alcohol in newborns, Bacteriostatic Minims Saline Injection, USP, 0.9% containing benzyl alcohol must not be used in this patient population.

Bacteriostatic Minims Saline Injection, USP, 0.9% should not be used for fluid or Minims Saline replacement.
