Actions of Guaifenesin (Novo-Passit) in details

Guaifenesin (Novo-Passit) may act as an irritant to gastric vagal receptors, and recruit efferent parasympathetic reflexes that cause glandular exocytosis of a less viscous mucus mixture. Cough may be provoked. This combination may flush tenacious, congealed mucopurulent material from obstructed small airways and lead to a temporary improvement in dyspnea or the work of breathing.

How should I take Guaifenesin (Novo-Passit)?

Use Guaifenesin (Novo-Passit) exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Do not give Guaifenesin (Novo-Passit) to a child younger than 4 years old. Always ask a doctor before giving a cough or cold medicine to a child. Death can occur from the misuse of cough and cold medicines in very young children. Drink extra fluids to help loosen the congestion and lubricate your throat while you are taking this medication. Take Guaifenesin (Novo-Passit) with food if it upsets your stomach.

Measure the liquid form of Guaifenesin (Novo-Passit) with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.

Do not crush, chew, break, or open a controlled-release, delayed-release, or extended-release tablet or capsule. Swallow it whole. Breaking or opening the pill may cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.

Store Guaifenesin (Novo-Passit) at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight.

Oral: Administer with a large quantity of fluid to ensure proper action.

ER tablet: Do not break, crush, or chew ER tablet.

Bariatric surgery: Some institutions may have specific protocols that conflict with these recommendations; refer to institutional protocols as appropriate. Switch to IR tablet or oral solution.

Granules: Empty contents of packet onto tongue and swallow; for best taste, do not chew granules.

Guaifenesin (Novo-Passit) pharmacology

Guaifenesin (Novo-Passit) is an expectorant which increases the output of phlegm (sputum) and bronchial secretions by reducing adhesiveness and surface tension. The increased flow of less viscous secretions promotes ciliary action and changes a dry, unproductive cough to one that is more productive and less frequent. By reducing the viscosity and adhesiveness of secretions, Guaifenesin (Novo-Passit) increases the efficacy of the mucociliary mechanism in removing accumulated secretions from the upper and lower airway.

How should I take St. John's Wort (Novo-Passit)?

The use of St. John's Wort (Novo-Passit) in cultural and traditional settings may differ from concepts accepted by current Western medicine. When considering the use of herbal supplements, consultation with a primary health care professional is advisable. Additionally, consultation with a practitioner trained in the uses of herbal/health supplements may be beneficial and coordination of treatment among all health care providers involved may be advantageous.

If you choose to take St. John's Wort (Novo-Passit), use it as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor, pharmacist, or other health care provider.

Standardized extracts, tinctures, and solid formulations of herbal/health supplements may provide a more reliable dose of the product.

Take the pill forms of St. John's Wort (Novo-Passit) with a full glass of water.

Some forms of St. John's Wort (Novo-Passit) can be brewed to form a tea for drinking.

Use the topical forms of St. John's Wort (Novo-Passit) externally only.

Do not take more of this medication than is recommended. Too much medicine could be dangerous.

Do not use different formulations (e.g., tablets, topical formulations, teas, tinctures, and others) of St. John's Wort (Novo-Passit) at the same time, unless specifically directed to do so by a health care professional. Using different formulations together increases the risk of an overdose of St. John's Wort (Novo-Passit).

Store St. John's Wort (Novo-Passit) as directed on the package. In general, St. John's Wort (Novo-Passit) should be protected from light and moisture and stored in a sealed container.

How should I take Valerian (Novo-Passit)?

When considering the use of herbal supplements, seek the advice of your doctor. You may also consider consulting a practitioner who is trained in the use of herbal/health supplements.

If you choose to use valerian, use it as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare provider. Do not use more of this product than is recommended on the label.

Do not crush, chew, break, or open a valerian capsule. Swallow it whole.

If you need surgery, stop taking valerian at least 2 weeks ahead of time.

Call your doctor if the condition you are treating with valerian does not improve, or if it gets worse while using this product.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
