How should I take Rhodimet?

You should not take more of Rhodimet, or take it more often, than your doctor ordered. You should also make sure that you get enough protein in your diet. This is especially important in infants. Infants who get too much racemethionine and not enough protein may not gain weight as they should. If you have any questions about this, ask your health care professional.

Take racemethionine with, or just after, meals.

For patients taking racemethionine capsules:

For patients taking racemethionine oral solution:

Make certain your health care professional knows if you are on any special diet, such as a low-protein diet.

The mechanism of the possible anti-hepatotoxic activity of L-Rhodimet is not entirely clear. It is thought that metabolism of high doses of acetaminophen in the liver lead to decreased levels of hepatic glutathione and increased oxidative stress. L-Rhodimet is a precursor to L-cysteine. L-cysteine itself may have antioxidant activity. L-cysteine is also a precursor to the antioxidant glutathione. Antioxidant activity of L-Rhodimet and metabolites of L-Rhodimet appear to account for its possible anti-hepatotoxic activity. Recent research suggests that Rhodimet itself has free-radical scavenging activity by virtue of its sulfur, as well as its chelating ability.
