Investigation of the state of electrolyte and acid-base balance is necessary in every patient, so as to detect any contraindications to particular cations or anions. This is especially important in patients with impaired excretory function (renal failure, anuria) or dehydration. Retention of K+ and Na+ may occur in patients with bilateral impairment of renal function.

Solicard precautions

Monitor electrolyte balance and acid-base balance regularly especially in patients with renal disorders. Patients with low urine output, congestive heart failure, hypertension, renal dysfunction, peripheral or pulmonary oedema, or toxaemia of pregnancy. Preparations containing potassium should be used with extreme caution in patients in whom large amount of potassium may have a detrimental effect.
