Chlorpheniramine maleate (Syncold-P) belongs to class of medications called antihistamines. It acts by blocking a natural chemical (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reaction. Histamine is responsible for many symptoms of allergy.

How should I take Chlorpheniramine maleate (Syncold-P)?

This section provides information on the proper use of a number of products that contain cough and cold combinations. It may not be specific to Chlorpheniramine maleate (Syncold-P). Please read with care.

Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. This medicine is usually taken only for a short time until your symptoms clear up.

Do not take for longer than 7 days in a row. Talk with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 7 days of treatment, or if you have a fever with a headache or skin rash.

Chlorpheniramine maleate (Syncold-P) acts directly on both alpha- and, to a lesser degree, beta-adrenergic receptors. Through direct action on alpha-adrenergic receptors in the mucosa of the respiratory tract, pseudoephedrine produces vasoconstriction. Chlorpheniramine maleate (Syncold-P) relaxes bronchial smooth muscle by stimulating beta2-adrenergic receptors. Like ephedrine, pseudoephedrine releasing norepinephrine from its storage sites, an indirect effect.

The displaced noradrenaline is released into the neuronal synapse where it is free to activate the postsynaptic adrenergic receptors.

Pseudoephedrine HCl (Syncold-P) pharmacology

Pseudoephedrine HCl (Syncold-P) is a sympathomimetic agent, structurally similar to ephedrine, used to relieve nasal and sinus congestion and reduce air-travel-related otalgia in adults. The salts Pseudoephedrine HCl (Syncold-P) hydrochloride and Pseudoephedrine HCl (Syncold-P) sulfate are found in many over-the-counter preparations either as single-ingredient preparations, or more commonly in combination with antihistamines and/or paracetamol/ibuprofen. Unlike antihistamines, which modify the systemic histamine-mediated allergic response, Pseudoephedrine HCl (Syncold-P) only serves to relieve nasal congestion commonly associated with colds or allergies. The advantage of oral Pseudoephedrine HCl (Syncold-P) over topical nasal preparations, such as oxymetazoline, is that it does not cause rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa).
