What are the possible side effects of Camphor (Viohydrocort)?
All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. No COMMON side effects have been reported with Camphor (Viohydrocort). Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); severe irritation at the application site.

Side effects of Camphor (Viohydrocort) in details
Camphor is LIKELY SAFE for most adults when applied to the skin in a cream or lotion in low concentrations. Camphor can cause some minor side effects such as skin redness and irritation. Don’t use undiluted camphor products or products containing more than 11% camphor. These can be irritating and unsafe.
Camphor-containing products are LIKELY UNSAFE when applied to broken or injured skin. Camphor is easily absorbed through broken skin and can reach toxic levels in the body.
Camphor is also LIKELY SAFE for most adults when inhaled as vapor in small amounts as a part of aromatherapy. Don’t use more than 1 tablespoon camphor solution per quart of water.
Do not heat camphor-containing products (Vicks VapoRub, BenGay, Heet, many others) in the microwave. The product can explode and cause severe burns.
Camphor is UNSAFE when taken by mouth by adults or children. Ingesting camphor can cause severe side effects, including death. The first symptoms of camphor toxicity occur quickly (within 5 to 90 minutes), and can include burning of the mouth and throat, nausea, and vomiting.
What is the most important information I should know about Camphor (Viohydrocort)?
- Camphor (Viohydrocort) is for external use only. Avoid contact with your eyes, ears, lips, mouth, or genital area. If you get it in any of these areas, rinse right away with cool water.
- Do not use a heating pad after you apply Camphor (Viohydrocort).
- Do NOT use more than the recommended dose or use more often than directed without checking with your doctor.
- If your symptoms do not get better within 7 days, if they get worse, or if they get better and then return, check with your doctor.
- Camphor (Viohydrocort) has a salicylate in it. Salicylates have been linked to a serious illness called Reye syndrome. Do not give Camphor (Viohydrocort) to a child or teenager who has the flu, chickenpox, or a viral infection. Contact your doctor with any questions or concerns
- Camphor (Viohydrocort) may cause harm if it is swallowed. If you may have taken it by mouth, contact your or emergency room right away.
- Camphor (Viohydrocort) should not be used in CHILDREN younger than 12 years old without first checking with the child's doctor; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
- PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Camphor (Viohydrocort) while you are pregnant. It is not known if Camphor (Viohydrocort) is found in breast milk after topical use. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Camphor (Viohydrocort), check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.
Camphor (Viohydrocort) contraindications
Children under 30 months.
- Skin oozing.
- Skin superinfected.
- Do not use on mucous membranes.
- Connected to the presence of terpene derivatives:
. infants under 30 months
. children with a history of seizures (febrile or not).
- Do not apply to the breasts when breastfeeding.
What are the possible side effects of Clioquinol (Viohydrocort)?
Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:
Rare
- Burning, itching, rash, redness, swelling, or other sign of skin irritation not present before use of Clioquinol (Viohydrocort) or becoming worse during treatment

Serious side effects of Clioquinol (Viohydrocort) topical use are unexpected. Stop using Clioquinol (Viohydrocort) topical and see your doctor if you experience unusual or severe blistering, itching, redness, peeling, dryness, swelling, or irritation of the skin.
Clioquinol (Viohydrocort) contraindications
This medication (as eardrops) should not be used by anyone who:
* has a punctured eardrum
* has pre-existing tuberculosis of the skin, fungal, or viral infections of the skin (e.g., chickenpox, skin eruptions following vaccination, herpex simplex, herpes zoster)
* is allergic to corticosteroids, iodine, Clioquinol (Viohydrocort), flumethasone pivalate, hydroxyquinolines or quinolone derivatives, or any of the ingredients of the medication
* is under two years of age. This medication(as cream) should not be used by anyone who:
* has pre-existing tuberculosis of the skin, fungal, or viral infections of the skin (e.g., chickenpox, skin eruptions following vaccination, herpex simplex, herpes zoster)
* has rosacea, acne vulgaris, or dermatitis around the mouth
* has open wounds or ulcerated areas on the skin
* is allergic to corticosteroids, iodine, Clioquinol (Viohydrocort), flumethasone pivalate, hydroxyquinolines or quinolone derivatives, or any of the ingredients of the medication
* is under two years of age

Major Side Effects

- Aggression
- agitation
- anxiety
- blurred vision
- decrease in the amount of urine
- dizziness
- fast, slow, pounding, or irregular heartbeat or pulse
- headache
- irritability
- mental depression
- mood changes
- nervousness
- noisy, rattling breathing
- numbness or tingling in the arms or legs
- pounding in the ears
- shortness of breath
- swelling of the fingers, hands, feet, or lower legs
- trouble thinking, speaking, or walking
- troubled breathing at rest
- weight gain
- Abdominal cramping and/or burning (severe)
- abdominal pain
- backache
- bloody, black, or tarry stools

- darkening of skin
- decrease in height

Minor Side Effects
Some of the side effects that can occur with hydrocortisone may not need medical attention. As your body adjusts to the medicine during treatment these side effects may go away. Your health care professional may also be able to tell you about ways to reduce or prevent some of these side effects. - Increased appetite
- Abnormal fat deposits on the face, neck, and trunk
- acne
- dry scalp
- lightening of normal skin color
- red face
- reddish purple lines on the arms, face, legs, trunk, or groin
- swelling of the stomach area
- thinning of the scalp hair
What is the most important information I should know about Hydrocortisone acetate (Viohydrocort)?
- If your symptoms do not get better within 7 days or if they get worse, check with your doctor.
- Do not use Hydrocortisone acetate (Viohydrocort) for other rectal conditions at a later time.
- Do not get Hydrocortisone acetate (Viohydrocort) in your eyes. If you get Hydrocortisone acetate (Viohydrocort) your eyes, immediately flush them with cool tap water.
- Check with your doctor or pharmacist concerning the use of a stool softener or bulk laxative to help improve your symptoms.
- Check with your doctor before having vaccinations while you are using Hydrocortisone acetate (Viohydrocort).
- Hydrocortisone acetate (Viohydrocort) may lower the ability of your body to fight infection. Avoid contact with people who have colds or infections. Tell your doctor if you notice signs of infection like fever, sore throat, rash, or chills.
- Hydrocortisone acetate (Viohydrocort) should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.

Hydrocortisone acetate (Viohydrocort) contraindications
Hydrocortisone acetate (Viohydrocort)® is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any components of this product.
Local contraindications to the use of intrarectal steroids include obstruction, abscess, perforation, peritonitis, fresh intestinal anastomoses, extensive fistulas and sinus tracts.
