Whey protein indications

Nestlé Whey protein can be used as a full liquid diet or liquid supplement. It can be fed orally or by tubes (eg, nasogastric, nasoduodenal and nasojejunal feeding tubes) for children with neurological, pulmonary, critical illness; for children or patients with inadequate voluntary oral intake eg, cancer, anorexia, stroke; for patients with barriers to normal ingestion eg, coma, paralysis, head and neck cancer; and for pre- and postsurgical children and children at risk of malnutrition.

Whey protein description

Nestlé Whey protein contains whey protein (50% of total protein), potassium caseinate, maltodextrin, sucrose, high oleic sunflower oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, medium-chain triglycerides (18.5% of total fat), soya lecithin, 30 vitamins and minerals which include vitamins A (retinyl acetate), D3 (cholecalciferol), E (sodium DL-α-tocopheryl acetate), K (phylloquinone), C (sodium ascorbate), B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), niacin, B6 (pyridoxine HCl), folic acid, calcium D-pantothenate, B12 (cyanocobalamin), D-biotin, choline, taurine and carnitine, calcium carbonate, sodium phosphate, magnesium chloride, zinc sulphate, ferrous sulphate, copper sulphate, manganese sulphate, potassium iodide, sodium chloride, potassium phosphate, calcium chloride, chromium chloride, sodium molybdate and sodium selenate.

Nestlé Whey protein is a 50% Whey protein formula with 18.5% medium chain triglycerides (MCT) and unique fat blend. Nestlé Whey protein is a nutritionally complete, isocaloric (1 kCal/mL), and balanced enteral diet for food replacement or food supplement and meets 100% of US RDAs for all essential vitamins and minerals in 1000 kCal (ages 1-3) or 1500 kCal (ages 4-8).

Nestlé Whey protein is a nutritionally balanced enteral formula offering complete nutrition for tube and oral feeding for children requiring nutritional support during pre- and post-operative nutrition, prevention and correction of malnutrition. Nestlé Whey protein is lactose-free and gluten-free.

Special Characteristics: Nestlé Whey protein is a nutritionally complete, balanced and isotonic diet intended for both enteral tube feeding and oral supplementation for children requiring enteral nutrition support. It provides total nutritional need for short- or long-term feeding of children with normal or near normal gastrointestinal function, for the prevention and correction of malnutrition.

Energy Distribution: Nestlé Whey protein's energy distribution is protein 12%, fat 36% and carbohydrate 52%. This distribution well supports the transition from infant to adult formulas. Children 1-10 years have their specific nutritional need. If they continuously get infant formulas, they may get excessive fat which may cause obesity. Adult formulas are often inappropriate for them because of the higher protein and electrolyte levels that result in a higher renal solute load.

Palatability: The mild vanilla flavor, taste and smooth texture of Nestlé Whey protein encourage acceptance as an oral feeding.

Protein: The unique blend of protein in Nestlé Whey protein (Whey protein 50% and casein 50%) is high in nutritional value and is easily digested and well-tolerated. Protein source is Whey protein 50% which enhances tolerance for patients with delayed gastric emptying due to their disease process (neurologically-impaired and diabetics), and reduce the risk of aspiration. Essential amino acid requirements are fulfilled with this protein source and this blend has a high biological value with a chemical score of >100% of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)/ World Health Organization (WHO) standard (1997).

Lipid: Nestlé Whey protein contains readily absorbable fat blend (MCT 18.5% of total fat) to enhance tolerance and ease fat absorption and reduce unpleasant symptoms of fat intolerance. The unique blend of lipid profile in Nestlé Whey protein was designed to optimise tolerance for tube-fed patients. It provides abundant levels of essential fatty acids and meets recommendations for long-term dietary intake. Canola oil, high oleic sunflower oil, sunflower oil and high docosahexaenoic acid long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (DHA LC-PUFA) are included in its fat blend as good sources of linoleic and linolenic acids, the high quality polyunsaturated fatty acids which are important during child development. n-6:n-3 ratio is 5.1 with DHA 43 mg/L and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) 13 mg/L at standard reconstitution.

Carbohydrates: In line with US RDA for children beyond infancy, 52% of energy from Nestlé Whey protein generates from its carbohydrate blend. The main role of carbohydrate is to provide energy without producing ketosis and contribute to the low osmolality of the product. The low level of sugar makes Nestlé Whey protein ideal for oral supplementation; avoiding an excessively sweet taste which may contribute to taste fatigue and poor compliance and to diabetics, with proper monitoring and medical management. As the carbohydrate source is predominantly maltodextrin rather than sucrose, Whey protein is able to maintain a low osmolarity, which is an important factor affecting tolerance of a tube feeding. For Whey protein, a mix of prebiotics is proposed (FOS/inulin 1.4 g/L + acacia gum 1.4 g/L). This mix is designed to reach active doses of prebiotics (2.8 g/L) that are well tolerated and will sustain claims mainly related to a healthy balance of the intestinal flora and enhancement of immune functions potentially effective for better protection.

Nestle Whey protein contains 2 probiotics, Lactobacillus paracasei (NCC2461, ST11) at 5x106 CFU/g and Bifidobacterium longum (NCC3001, BB536) at 2x106 CFU/g. At quantities that are sufficient and clinically proven to colonize the gastrointestinal tract and exert functional benefit to improve gut health and improves immune protection.

Vitamins: Nestlé Whey protein provides appropriate level of all essential vitamins and minerals for the nutritionally-compromised tube- and oral-fed patients, including additional amounts of vitamins A, D, folic acid, biotin, choline, taurine and carnitine.

Minerals: Nestlé Whey protein added ultratrace minerals to assure optimum nutrition, particularly for those individuals on extended feeding. Nestlé Whey protein provides additional levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iodine, potassium, chromium, molybdenum and selenium.

Isotonic Osmolality: 380 mOsmol/kg of water (osmolarity is 330 mOsmol/L) allows Nestlé Whey protein to be initiated at full strength and eliminates the risk of osmotic diarrhea and high osmotic intolerance.

Reconstitution: Nestlé Whey protein is easy to dissolve and mix and thus, can be reconstituted at higher caloric densities, 1.5 and 2 kCal/mL. This provides a reliable technique for the clinician to meet the fluid-restricted or volume-sensitive patient's energy requirements in a limited volume. It minimizes preparation time and reduces risk of clogging tubes.

Nestlé Whey protein contains only readily digested nutrients to assure a minimum residue.

Cholesterol-Free: Minimizes hyperlipidemia and arteriosclerosis.

Lactose-Free: Minimizes diarrhea and other side effects of lactose intolerance.

Gluten-free.

See Tables 1 and 2.
