What are the possible side effects of Frusenex?
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Frusenex: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:

ringing in your ears, hearing loss;
-
confusion, drowsiness, problems with memory or speech;
-
jaundice (dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes);
-
severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back;
-
nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, sweet or musty breath odor;
-
pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding;
-
sudden weakness or ill feeling, fever, chills, sore throat;
-
signs of an electrolyte imbalance - dry mouth, increased thirst, mood changes, muscle pain or weakness, lack of energy, fast heartbeats, little or no urination;
-
kidney problems - little or no urination, painful or difficult urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath; or
-
severe skin reaction - fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.
Common Frusenex side effects may include:

numbness or tingling;
-
headache, dizziness; or
-
blurred vision.

In addition to its needed effects, some unwanted effects may be caused by Frusenex (the active ingredient contained in Frusenex). In the event that any of these side effects do occur, they may require medical attention.
Major Side Effects
You should check with your doctor immediately if any of these side effects occur when taking Frusenex:
Rare
- Chest pain
- chills
- cough or hoarseness
- fever
- general feeling of tiredness or weakness
- headache
- lower back or side pain
- painful or difficult urination
- shortness of breath
- sore throat
- sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or in the mouth
- swollen or painful glands
- tightness in the chest
- unusual bleeding or bruising
- unusual tiredness or weakness
- wheezing
- Back or leg pains
- black, tarry stools
- bleeding gums
- blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin
- bloating
- blood in the urine or stools
- blurred vision
- burning, crawling, itching, numbness, prickling, "pins and needles", or tingling feelings
- changes in skin color, pain, tenderness, or swelling of the foot or leg
- clay-colored stools
- cloudy urine
- cold sweats
- confusion
- constipation
- continuing ringing or buzzing or other unexplained noise in the ears
- coughing up blood
- cracks in the skin
- darkened urine
- diarrhea
- difficulty breathing
- dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up from a lying or sitting position
- dry mouth
- fast heartbeat
- flushed, dry skin
- fruit-like breath odor
- greatly decreased frequency of urination or amount of urine
- hearing loss
- increased hunger
- increased thirst
- indigestion
- itching
- loss of appetite
- nausea or vomiting
- nosebleeds
- pain in the joints or muscles
- pains in the stomach, side, or abdomen, possibly radiating to the back
- pale skin
- pinpoint red spots on the skin
- red, irritated eyes
- red, swollen skin
- skin rash
- spots on your skin resembling a blister or pimple
- sweating
- swelling of the feet or lower legs
- trouble breathing with exertion
- unusual weight loss
- vomiting of blood
- yellow eyes or skin
If any of the following symptoms of overdose occur while taking Frusenex, get emergency help immediately:
Symptoms of overdose:
- Decreased urination
- drowsiness
- increase in heart rate
- irregular heartbeat
- irritability
- mood changes
- muscle cramps
- numbness, tingling, pain, or weakness in the hands, feet, or lips
- rapid breathing
- seizures
- sunken eyes
- thirst
- trembling
- weak pulse
- weakness and heaviness of the legs
- wrinkled skin
Minor Side Effects
Some of the side effects that can occur with Frusenex may not need medical attention. As your body adjusts to the medicine during treatment these side effects may go away. Your health care professional may also be able to tell you about ways to reduce or prevent some of these side effects. If any of the following side effects continue, are bothersome or if you have any questions about them, check with your health care professional:

- Feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings
- hives or welts
- increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight
- muscle spasm
- redness or other discoloration of the skin
- restlessness
- sensation of spinning
- severe sunburn
- weakness
What is the most important information I should know about Frusenex?
- Frusenex tablets may cause dizziness or blurred vision. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Frusenex tablets with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
- Frusenex tablets may cause dizziness, light-headedness, or fainting; alcohol, hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects.
- Diabetes patients - Frusenex tablets may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely. Ask your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine.
- Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Frusenex tablets before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
- Your doctor may also prescribe a potassium supplement while you take Frusenex tablets. Check with your doctor before you use a salt substitute or other product that has potassium in it.
- Frusenex tablets is a strong diuretic. Using too much of Frusenex tablets can lead to serious water and electrolyte (eg, potassium, sodium) loss. It is important that you are monitored by your doctor. Tell your doctor right away if you develop symptoms of dehydration or electrolyte problems (eg, very dry mouth; unusual thirst; decreased urination; mental or mood changes, such as confusion; fast or irregular heartbeat; muscle aches, cramps, pain, spasms, or weakness; drowsiness; seizures; sluggishness; unusual restlessness, loss of appetite, or weakness; nausea and vomiting).
- Do NOT take more than the recommended dose or use for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor.
- Patients who take medicine for high blood pressure often feel tired or run down for a few weeks after starting treatment. Be sure to take your medicine even if you may not feel "normal." Tell your doctor if you develop any new symptoms.
- If you have high blood pressure, do not use nonprescription products that contain stimulants. These products may include diet pills or cold medicines. Contact your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.
- Frusenex tablets may cause you to become sunburned more easily. Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Frusenex tablets. Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time.
- Lab tests, including blood pressure, blood electrolyte (eg, potassium, sodium) levels, complete blood cell counts, and liver and kidney function, may be performed while you use Frusenex tablets. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
- Use Frusenex tablets with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially dehydration.
- Caution is advised when using Frusenex tablets in CHILDREN; they may be more sensitive to its effects.
- PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Frusenex tablets while you are pregnant. Frusenex tablets is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Frusenex tablets, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby. Frusenex tablets may decrease breast milk production. Discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor.
Frusenex contraindications
Hypersensitivity to Frusenex or any component of the formulation; anuria
Canadian labeling: Additional contraindications (not in US labeling): Hypersensitivity to sulfonamide-derived drugs; complete renal shutdown; hepatic coma and precoma; uncorrected states of electrolyte depletion, hypovolemia, dehydration, or hypotension; jaundiced newborn infants or infants with disease(s) capable of causing hyperbilirubinemia and possibly kernicterus; breast-feeding. Note: Manufacturer labeling for Frusenex Special and Frusenex Special Injection also includes: GFR <5 mL/minute or GFR >20 mL/minute; hepatic cirrhosis; renal failure accompanied by hepatic coma and precoma; renal failure due to poisoning with nephrotoxic or hepatotoxic substances.
Note: Although the approved product labeling states this medication is contraindicated with other sulfonamide-containing drug classes, the scientific basis of this statement has been challenged. See “Warnings/Precautions” for more detail.
