What is the most important information I should know about Metamucil?
- If your symptoms do not improve within 7 days or if they become worse, check with your doctor.
- Do not take additional laxatives or stool softeners with Metamucil powder unless directed by your doctor.
- Do not use Metamucil powder if you experience stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or rectal bleeding, except under the direction of your doctor.
- If you notice a sudden change in bowel habits that lasts for 2 weeks or more, do not continue using Metamucil powder. Instead, check with your doctor.
- Taking this product without enough liquid may cause it to swell and block your throat or esophagus and may cause choking. Do not take this product if you have difficulty swallowing. If you experience chest pain, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing or breathing after taking this product, seek immediate medical attention.
- Do not use Metamucil powder in CHILDREN younger than 12 years of age without first checking with your doctor.
- PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant while taking Metamucil powder, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Metamucil powder during pregnancy. It is unknown if Metamucil powder is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Metamucil powder, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
Metamucil contraindications
Pathological narrowing in the gastrointestinal tract. Threatened or existing intestinal obstruction (ileus). Poorly controlled diabetes mellitus.
Use in children: Insufficient investigations have been undertaken concerning the use of Metamucil in children. It should not therefore be given to children <12 years.
