What is Symax Duotab?

Symax Duotab produces many effects in the body, including relief from muscle spasms.

Symax Duotab also reduces the fluid secretions of many organs and glands in the body, such as the stomach, pancreas, lungs, saliva glands, sweat glands, and nasal passages.

Symax Duotab is used to treat many different stomach and intestinal disorders, including peptic ulcer and irritable bowel syndrome. It is also used to control muscle spasms in the bladder, kidneys, or digestive tract, and to reduce stomach acid. Symax Duotab is sometimes used to reduce tremors and rigid muscles in people with symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Symax Duotab is also used as a drying agent to control excessive salivation, runny nose, or excessive sweating.

Symax Duotab® is effective as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of peptic ulcer. In acute episodes, Symax Duotab® injection can be used to control gastric secretion, visceral spasm and hypermotility in spastic colitis, spastic bladder, cystitis, pylorospasm, and associated abdominal cramps. For use as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (irritable colon, spastic colon, mucous colitis) and functional gastrointestinal disorders. Also as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of neurogenic bladder and neurogenic bowel disturbances (including the splenic flexure syndrome and neurogenic colon).

Parenterally administered Symax Duotab® is also effective in reducing gastrointestinal motility to facilitate diagnostic procedures such as endoscopy or hypotonic duodenography. Symax Duotab® may be used to reduce pain and hypersecretion in pancreatitis, in certain cases of partial heart block associated with vagal activity, and as an antidote for poisoning by anticholinesterase agents.

IN ANESTHESIA:
Symax Duotab® injection is indicated as a pre-operative antimuscarinic to reduce salivary, tracheobronchial, and pharyngeal secretions, to reduce the volume and acidity of gastric secretions, and to block cardiac vagal inhibitory reflexes during induction of anesthesia and intubation. Symax Duotab® protects against the peripheral muscarinic effects such as bradycardia and excessive secretions produced by halogenated hydrocarbons and cholinergic agents such as physostigmine, neostigmine, and pyridostigmine given to reverse the actions of curariform agents.
IN UROLOGY:
Symax Duotab® injection may also be used intravenously to improve radiologic visibility of the kidneys. It is also indicated along with morphine or other narcotics in symptomatic relief of biliary and renal colic.

Symax Duotab is used to treat a variety of stomach/intestinal problems such as cramps and irritable bowel syndrome. It is also used to treat other conditions such as bladder and bowel control problems, cramping pain caused by kidney stones and gallstones, and Parkinson's disease. In addition, it is used to decrease side effects of certain medications (drugs used to treat myasthenia gravis) and insecticides.

This medication works by decreasing acid production in the stomach, slowing down the natural movements of the gut, and relaxing muscles in many organs (e.g., stomach, intestines, bladder, kidney, gallbladder). Symax Duotab also lessens the amount of certain body fluids (e.g., saliva, sweat). This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics/antispasmodics.

How to use Symax Duotab sublingual

Place this medication under the tongue and allow it to dissolve. This medication may also be swallowed whole or chewed. It may be taken with or without meals. Take it as prescribed by your doctor.

Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Do not increase your dose or take it more often than prescribed without consulting your doctor. Adults and children 12 years and older should not take more than 1.5 milligrams in 24 hours. Children aged 2 to 12 years should not take more than 0.75 milligrams in 24 hours. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Antacids lower the absorption of Symax Duotab. If you use antacids, take them after meals and take Symax Duotab before meals; or take antacids at least 1 hour after taking Symax Duotab.

Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication unless your doctor directs you otherwise.

Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Symax Duotab is a chemical compound, a tropane alkaloid it is the levo-isomer to atropine. It is a secondary metabolite of some plants, particularly henbane (Hyoscamus niger.) Symax Duotab is used to provide symptomatic relief to various gastrointestinal disorders including spasms, peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatitis, colic and cystitis. It has also been used to relieve some heart problems, control some of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, as well as for control of respiratory secretions in end of life care.

Usual adult and adolescent dose: 1 to 2 tablets three or four times a day, thirty minutes to one hour before meals and at bedtime, the dosage being adjusted as needed and tolerated.

Note: Geriatric patients may be more sensitive to the effects of the usual adult dose.

Usual dose for children 6 to under 12 years of age: 1/2 to 1 tablet three or four times a day, thirty minutes to one hour before meals and at bedtime. Dosage should be individualized by physician according to patient’s needsand tolerance

Additive adverse effects resulting from cholinergic blockade may occur when Symax Duotab® (Symax Duotab) is administered concomitantly with other antimuscarinics, amantadine, haloperidol, phenothiazines, monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants or some antihistamines.

Antacids may interfere with the absorption of Symax Duotab® (Symax Duotab). Administer Symax Duotab® (Symax Duotab) before meals; antacids after meals.

Side effects include:

Most adverse effects are manifestations of pharmacologic effects at muscarinic-cholinergic receptors and usually are reversible when therapy is discontinued.

Severity and frequency of adverse effects are dose related and individual intolerance varies greatly; adverse effects occasionally may be obviated by a reduction in dosage but this also may eliminate potential therapeutic effects.

Adverse effects include dry mouth, urinary hesitancy and retention, blurred vision, tachycardia, palpitations, mydriasis, increased ocular tension, loss of taste, headache, nervousness, drowsiness, weakness, fatigue, dizziness, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, impotence, constipation, bloated feeling, abdominal pain, diarrhea, allergic reactions or drug idiosyncrasies, urticaria and other dermal manifestations, ataxia, speech disturbance, mental confusion and/or excitement (especially in geriatric patients), short-term memory loss, hallucinations, and decreased sweating.

Do not take Symax Duotab if you are allergic to it, or if you have kidney disease, a bladder or intestinal obstruction, severe ulcerative colitis, toxic megacolon, glaucoma, or myasthenia gravis.

Before taking Symax Duotab, tell your doctor if you have heart disease, congestive heart failure, a heart rhythm disorder, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid, or hiatal hernia with gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Avoid taking antacids at the same time you take Symax Duotab. Antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb Symax Duotab. If you use an antacid, take it after you have taken Symax Duotab and eaten a meal.

Symax Duotab may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.

Drinking alcohol can increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking Symax Duotab.

Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Symax Duotab can decrease sweating and you may be more prone to heat stroke.
