Ophthalmic surgical aid in anterior segment surgical procedures, including cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation.

Uses of Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose in details

Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is used to relieve burning, irritation and discomfort of dry eye conditions associated with-deficient tear production, infrequent blinking, smoke, wind, pollution, extended use of computer screen or television, medical treatment, dry atmospheric conditions (air-conditioning, central heating). It may also be used to aid insertion of hard contact lenses and increase comfort during wear. It is also indicated to aid certain eye examinations and surgeries.

Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose description

Each pre-filled syringe contains 2 mL sterile solution.

Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is a sterile, isotonic, nonpyrogenic viscoelastic solution of highly purified, non-inflammatory, hypromellose 2%. It is supplied in a sterile nontoxic pyrogen-free syringe with cannula.

Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose dosage

Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose should be carefully introduced into the anterior chamber using the provided cannula. It may be injected into the chamber prior to or following delivery of the crystalline lens. Injection prior to lens delivery will provide additional protection to the corneal endothelium and other ocular tissues. Coating of Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose may protect the corneal endothelium from possible damage arising from surgical instrumentation during the cataract extraction surgery.

It may also be used to coat an intraocular lens, as well as tips of surgical instruments prior to implantation surgery. Additional Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose may be injected during anterior segment surgery to fully maintain the chamber or to replace fluid lost during the surgical procedure. It should be removed from the anterior chamber at the end of surgery.

Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose side effects

sponsored

Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is shown to be extremely well tolerated after injection into the human eye. A transient rise in intraocular pressure postoperatively has been reported in some cases. Rarely, postoperative inflammatory reactions (iritis, hypopyon), as well as incidents of corneal edema and corneal decompensation have been reported with viscoelastic agents. Their relationship to this formulation has not been established.
