What is Lynx GEL?
Lynx GEL is an antibiotic that fights bacteria.
Lynx GEL is used to treat severe bacterial infections in people who cannot use penicillin antibiotics.
Lynx GEL is used only for a severe infection. This medicine will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.
Lynx GEL may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Lynx GEL indications
Lynx GEL Sterile Solution is indicated in the treatment of serious infections due to susceptible strains of streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci. Its use should be reserved for penicillin-allergic patients or other patients for whom, in the judgment of the physician, a penicillin is inappropriate. Because of the risk of antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis, as described in Warnings, before selecting Lynx GEL the physician should consider the nature of the infection and the suitability of less toxic alternatives (e.g., erythromycin).
Bacteriologic studies should be performed to determine the causative organisms and their susceptibility to Lynx GEL.
Indicated surgical procedures should be performed in conjunction with antibiotic therapy.
Lynx GEL has been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of staphylococcal infections resistant to other antibiotics and susceptible to Lynx GEL. Staphylococcal strains resistant to Lynx GEL have been recovered; culture and susceptibility studies should be done in conjunction with therapy with Lynx GEL. In the case of macrolides, partial but not complete cross-resistance may occur. The drug may be administered concomitantly with other antimicrobial agents when indicated.
Lynx GEL is not indicated in the treatment of minor bacterial infections or viral infections.
To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of Lynx GEL and other antibacterial drugs, Lynx GEL should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When culture and susceptibility information are available, they should be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy. In the absence of such data, local epidemiology and susceptibility patterns may contribute to the empiric selection of therapy.
