What is Nora-BE?
Nora-BE is used to prevent pregnancy. It is a birth control pill that contains a hormone, Nora-BE, and when taken properly, prevents pregnancy.
Nora-BE is also used to treat secondary amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods in women who have previously had a menstrual period who are not pregnant), endometriosis, and irregular menstrual periods caused by hormonal imbalance.
No contraceptive method is 100 percent effective. Birth control methods such as having surgery to become sterile or not having sex are more effective than birth control pills. Discuss your options for birth control with your doctor.
Nora-BE does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases. It will not help as emergency contraception, such as after unprotected sexual contact.
Nora-BE is available only with your doctor's prescription.
Nora-BE indications
- Indications
Progestin-only oral contraceptives are indicated for the prevention of pregnancy.
- Efficacy
If used perfectly, the first-year failure rate for progestin-only oral contraceptives is 0.5%. However, the typical failure rate is estimated to be closer to 5%, due to late or omitted pills. Table 1 lists the pregnancy rates for users of all major methods of contraception.
Table 1: Percentage of Women Experiencing an Unintended Pregnancy During the First Year of Typical Use and the First Year of Perfect Use of Contraception and the Percentage Continuing Use at the End of the First Year. United States.
% of Women Experiencing an Unintended Pregnancy within the First Year of Use | % of Women Continuing Use at One YearHowever, to maintain effective protection against pregnancy, another method of contraception must be used as soon as menstruation resumes, the frequency or duration of breastfeeds is reduced, bottle feeds are introduced, or the baby reaches six months of age. |
Nora-BE® (Nora-BE) Tablets have not been studied for and are not indicated for use in emergency contraception.
How should I use Nora-BE?
Use Nora-BE tablets as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
- An extra patient leaflet is available with Nora-BE tablets. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about this information.
- Take Nora-BE tablets by mouth with or without food.
- Begin taking Nora-BE tablets on the first day of your menstrual period. If you begin taking Nora-BE tablets on a different day, use a backup method of birth control (eg, condoms, spermicides) for the next 48 hours.
- Take Nora-BE tablets at the same time every day, with doses not more than 24 hours apart.
- Start the next pack the day after the last pack is finished. There is no break between packs. Be sure to call in your refills ahead of time so that your next pack will be ready.
- If you take Nora-BE tablets more than 3 hours late, or if you vomit soon after taking Nora-BE tablets, use a backup method of birth control (eg, condoms, spermicides) for the next 48 hours.
- If you miss a dose of Nora-BE tablets, take it as soon as possible and then return to your regular dosing schedule. If you are unsure what to do about a missed dose, contact your doctor or other health care provider.
Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Nora-BE tablets.

Dosage form: tablet
The information at Drugs.com is not a substitute for medical advice. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Therapy with Nora-BE must be adapted to the specific indications and therapeutic response of the individual patient.
Secondary amenorrhea, abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance in the absence of organic pathology
2.5 to 10 mg Nora-BE may be given daily for 5 to 10 days to produce secretory transformation of an endometrium that has been adequately primed with either endogenous or exogenous estrogen.
Progestin withdrawal bleeding usually occurs within three to seven days after discontinuing Nora-BE therapy. Patients with a past history of recurrent episodes of abnormal uterine bleeding may benefit from planned menstrual cycling with Nora-BE.
Endometriosis
Initial daily dosage of 5 mg Nora-BE for two weeks. Dosage should be increased by 2.5 mg per day every two weeks until 15 mg per day of Nora-BE is reached. Therapy may be held at this level for six to nine months or until annoying breakthrough bleeding demands temporary termination.

What other drugs will affect Nora-BE?
The effectiveness of progestin-only pills is reduced by hepatic enzyme-inducing drugs such as the anticonvulsants phenytoin, carbamazepine, and barbiturates, and the antituberculosis drug rifampin. No significant interaction has been found with broad-spectrum antibiotics.
Herbal products containing St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) may induce hepatic enzymes (cytochrome P450) and p-glycoprotein transporter and may reduce the effectiveness of contraceptive steroids. This may also result in breakthrough bleeding.
Concurrent use of bosentan and Nora-BE containing products may result in decreased concentrations of these contraceptive hormones thereby increasing the risk of unintended pregnancy and unscheduled bleeding.
Interactions With Laboratory Tests
The following endocrine tests may be affected by progestin-only oral contraceptive use:
- Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) concentrations may be decreased.
- Thyroxine concentrations may be decreased, due to a decrease in thyroid binding globulin (TBG).
