What is Oticaine?

Oticaine is a local anesthetic (numbing medicine). It works by blocking nerve signals in your body.

Oticaine (for use in the ears) is used to treat pain and irritation caused by ear infection or injury.

Oticaine is not an antibiotic and will not treat an ear infection.

Oticaine may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Oticaine Aerosol Spray is a topical anesthetic. It works by numbing the skin.

How should I use Oticaine?

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Use this medicine only in the affected ear. You may not need to use it in both ears.

Wash your hands before using this medicine.

To use the ear drops:

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse while using Oticaine.

Do not share this medicine with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have.

Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.

Oticaine is used short term to relieve pain from minor mouth problems (such as toothache, canker sores, sore gums/throat, mouth/gum injury). It is a local anesthetic that works by numbing the painful area.

Do not use this product for children younger than 2 years unless directed by your doctor. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

How to use Oticaine

Follow all directions on the product package. If your doctor has prescribed this medication, use it as directed. If you are uncertain about any of the information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Do not use this medication more than 4 times a day unless directed by your doctor. Allow medication to stay on painful area for at least 1 minute before spitting out or rinsing the mouth.

Do not use large amounts of this drug or use more often than directed because the risk for serious side effects (including rarely fatal methemoglobinemia) will increase.

Avoid getting this medication in the eyes.

Stop using this medication and tell your doctor if your sore throat is severe or if it lasts for more than 2 days, or if your sore mouth symptoms last more than 7 days, or if you have a fever, headache, rash, swelling, nausea, or vomiting. You may have a serious medical problem that may require different treatment. If your condition persists or worsens, or if you think you may have a serious medical problem, get medical help right away.

  1. Each gram of Super Dent 20% Oticaine gel contains between 180-220mg Oticaine in a flavored base.
  2. Using a new cotton applicator, apply a small amount of gel to the mucosa to achieve topical anesthesia. Do not reintroduce the cotton applicator into the bottle.
  3. For topical tissue anesthesia during scaling procedures, dispense a small amount of Topex gel into a dappen dish, then coat the scaler with the product prior to use.
  4. Tightly re-cap the jar after each use.

Combinations containing any of the following medications, depending on the amount present, may also interact with this medication:

Cholinesterase inhibitors: Antimyasthenics; Cyclophosphamide; Demecarium; Echothiophate; Neurotoxic insecticides (possibly including large quantities of topical Malathion); Isoflurophate; Thiotepa (these agents may inhibit metabolism of ester derivatives; absorption of significant quantities of ester derivatives of ester derivatives in patients receiving a cholinesterase inhibitor may lead to increased risk of toxicity)

Sulfonamides: Metabolites of PABA-derivative topical anesthetics may antagonize antibacterial activity of sulfonamides, especially if the anesthetic are absorbed in significant quantities over prolonged period of time.
