What is Viarox?
Viarox is used to help control symptoms of asthma and improve breathing. It is used when a patient's asthma has not been controlled sufficiently on other asthma medicines, or when a patient's condition is so severe that more than one medicine is needed every day. Viarox will not relieve an asthma attack that has already started.
Viarox belongs to the family of medicines known as corticosteroids or steroids (cortisone-like medicines). It works by preventing certain cells in the lungs and breathing passages from releasing substances that cause asthma symptoms.
Viarox is available only with your doctor's prescription.
Viarox indications
Treatment of Asthma
Viarox is indicated in the maintenance treatment of asthma as prophylactic therapy in patients 5 years of age and older. Viarox is also indicated for asthma patients who require systemic corticosteroid administration, where adding Viarox may reduce or eliminate the need for the systemic corticosteroids.
Important Limitations of Use:
- •
- Viarox is NOT indicated for the relief of acute bronchospasm.
How should I use Viarox?
Use Viarox aerosol as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
- Viarox aerosol comes with an additional patient leaflet, including detailed instructions for use of Viarox aerosol. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about this information.
- Viarox aerosol is only for the nose.
- Before using Viarox aerosol for the first time, you must prime the device. Do not prime the device every day. To prime Viarox aerosol, remove the protective dust cap from the device. Hold the device upright between your thumb and forefinger (the canister should be on top, pointing down). Spray 4 times into the air, away from your eyes and face. After the first priming, the dose counter should read 120.
- If Viarox aerosol has not been used in more than 7 days, re-prime it by spraying 2 times.
- Clear your nose before using Viarox aerosol by blowing it gently.
- To use Viarox aerosol, remove the cap from the device.
- Tilt your head forward slightly. Carefully insert the tip of the spray container into one nostril, keeping the bottle upright. Point the tip slightly away from the nasal septum (wall between your nostrils). Using a finger from your other hand, press against the opposite nostril to close it off.
- Hold your breath and squeeze the spray container to release 1 spray. Continue to hold your breath for 5 seconds, then breathe out slowly through your mouth. Remove the device from your nostril.
- Repeat these steps in the same nostril or in your other nostril as directed by your health care provider.
- Do not spray Viarox aerosol directly onto the nasal septum (the wall between your nostrils).
- Do not blow your nose for 15 minutes after using Viarox aerosol.
- Wipe the nasal tip with a clean, dry tissue or cloth after use. Keep the device clean and dry at all times. Always replace the cap when finished.
- Throw the bottle away after 120 sprays (not counting the 4 sprays used to prime the device). Do not use Viarox aerosol after the device reads 0. You may no longer receive the correct amount of medicine with each spray. Do not transfer any remaining medicine to another bottle.
- Do not use this device with a canister of medicine from any other inhaler. Do not use the canister with a device from any other inhaler. Do not remove the canister from the device.
- Use Viarox aerosol on a regular schedule to get the most benefit from it. Using Viarox aerosol at the same time each day will help you remember to use it.
- If you miss a dose of Viarox aerosol, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Viarox aerosol.

Administration Information
Administer Viarox by the orally inhaled route only. Patients should prime Viarox by actuating into the air twice before using for the first time or if Viarox has not been used for over 10 days. Avoid spraying in the eyes or face when priming Viarox. Viarox is a solution aerosol, which does not require shaking. Consistent dose delivery is achieved, whether using the 40 or 80 mcg strengths, due to proportionality of the 2 products (i.e., 2 actuations of 40 mcg strength should provide a dose comparable to 1 actuation of the 80 mcg strength). Rinsing the mouth after inhalation is advised.
Viarox has a dose counter attached to the actuator. When the patient receives the inhaler, a black dot will appear in the viewing window until it has been primed 2 times, at which point the total number ofactuations will be displayed. The dose counter will count down each time a spray is released. The dose-counter window displays the number of sprays left in the inhaler in units of two (e.g., 120, 118, 116, etc). When the dose counter reaches 20, the color of the numbers will change to red to remind the patient to contact their pharmacist for a refill of medication or consult their physician for a prescription refill. When the dose counter reaches 0, the background will change to solid red.
Discard Viarox inhaler when the dose counter displays 0 or after the expiration date on the product, whichever comesfirst.
Maintenance Treatment of Asthma
Viarox should be administered by the oral inhaled route in patients 5 years of age and older. Use of Viarox with a spacer device in children less than 5 years of age is not recommended. [seeUse in Specific Populations (8.4)] The onset and degree of symptom relief will vary in individual patients. Improvement in asthma symptoms can occur within 24 hours of the beginning of treatment and should be expected within the first or second week, but maximum benefit should not be expected until 3 to 4 weeks of therapy. For patients who do not respond adequately to the starting dose after 3 to 4 weeks of therapy, higher doses may provide additional asthma control. The safety and efficacy of Viarox when administered in excess of recommended doses has not been established.
Patient’s Previous Therapy | Recommended Starting Dose | Highest Dose Recommended |
---|---|---|
Bronchodilators Alone | 40 to 80 mcg twice daily | 320 mcg twice daily |
Inhaled Corticosteroids | 40 to 160 mcg twice daily | 320 mcg twice daily |
Patient’s Previous Therapy | Recommended Starting Dose | Highest Dose Recommended |
---|---|---|
Bronchodilators Alone | 40 mcg twice daily | 80 mcg twice daily |
Inhaled Corticosteroids | 40 mcg twice daily | 80 mcg twice daily |
As with any inhaled corticosteroid, physicians are advised to titrate the dose of Viarox downward over time to the lowest level that maintains proper asthma control. This is particularly important in children since a controlled study has shown that Viarox has the potential to affect growth in children. Patients should be instructed on the proper use of their inhaler.
Patients Not Receiving Systemic Corticosteroids
Patients who require maintenance therapy of their asthma may benefit from treatment with Viarox at the doses recommended above. In patients who respond to Viarox, improvement in pulmonary function is usually apparent within 1 to 4 weeks after the start of therapy. Once the desired effect is achieved, consideration should be given to tapering to the lowest effective dose.
Patients Maintained on Systemic Corticosteroids
Prednisone or other oral corticosteroid should be weaned slowly beginning after at least 1 week of Viarox therapy. Monitor patients carefully for signs of asthma instability, including serial objective measures of airflow, and for signs of adrenal insufficiency during steroid taper and following discontinuation of oral corticosteroid therapy.

What are the possible side effects of Viarox?
The most commonly noted side effects associated with inhaled Viarox are mild cough or wheezing due to chemical irritation; these effects may be minimized by using an inhaled bronchodilator (e.g., albuterol or Ventolin) prior to the Viarox.
Oral candidiasis or thrush, a fungal infection of the mouth and throat, can occur in between 1 in 20 and 1 in 8 persons who use Viarox. The risk of thrush is greater with higher doses, but the risk in children is lower than in adults. Hoarseness may occur in as few as 1 in 20 or as many as 1 in 2 persons and is due to chemical irritation. A spacer device that can be attached to the inhaler and washing out the mouth with water following each use of Viarox reduces the amount of Viarox in the mouth and throat and reduces the risk of thrush and hoarseness. Higher doses of inhaled Viarox (more than 1000 mcg/day) may result in more absorption into the body. This may decrease bone formation and increase bone breakdown (resorption), resulting in weak bones and a risk of fractures. Even higher doses (more than 1500 mcg/day in adults and 400 mcg/day in children) may suppress the adrenal glands and impair their ability to make natural glucocorticoid. People with such suppression (which can be identified by testing) need increased amounts of glucocorticoid orally or by the intravenous route during periods of high physical stress since higher amounts of glucocorticoids are needed by the body to fight physical stress. Patients receiving Viarox may develop easy bruising if enough Viarox is absorbed into the body from the lungs.

What is the most important information I should know about Viarox?
Viarox inhalation will not work fast enough to treat an asthma attack. Use only a fast acting inhalation medicine for an asthma attack.
Contact your doctor if your asthma symptoms do not improve after using Viarox for 2 weeks.
Seek medical attention if you think any of your asthma medications are not working as well as usual. An increased need for medication could be an early sign of a serious asthma attack. Your dosage needs may also change if you have surgery, are ill, are under stress, or have recently had an asthma attack.
If you switched to Viarox inhalation from an oral (taken by mouth) steroid, you may need to restart the oral medicine if you are under stress or have an asthma attack or other medical emergency. Wear a medical alert tag or carry an ID card stating that you may need an oral steroid in an emergency.
