What is Spiramycin?
Spiramycin is used to treat many kinds of infections. It is often used to treat toxoplasmosis in pregnant women since Spiramycin decreases the chance that the unborn baby will get the infection. Spiramycin may also be used for other problems as determined by your doctor. It will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections.
Spiramycin is available only with your doctor's prescription.
Spiramycin indications
Infections due to microorganisms sensitive to Spiramycin, particularly, ear, nose and throat; bronchopulmonary and skin infections. Prophylaxis or meningococcal meningitis in certain cases when rifampicin is contraindicated.

Spiramycin is used to treat certain bacterial infections of lungs, bones, skin, soft tissues, ears, nose, throat, urninary tract, and brain.
Spiramycin description
A synthetic nonsteroidal estrogen used in the treatment of menopausal and postmenopausal disorders. It was also used formerly as a growth promoter in animals. According to the Fourth Annual Report on Carcinogens (NTP 85-002, 1985), diethylstilbestrol has been listed as a known carcinogen. (Merck, 11th ed)
Spiramycin dosage
Oral
Toxoplasmosis; Protozoal infections; Cryptosporidiosis; Susceptible infections
Adult: 6-9 million units/day in 2-3 divided doses, increased to 15 million units/day, given in divided doses for severe infections.
Child: and neonates: Chemoprophylaxis of congenital toxoplasmosis: 50 mg/kg bid.
Intravenous
Toxoplasmosis; Protozoal infections; Cryptosporidiosis; Susceptible infections
Adult: 1.5 million units by slow infusion every 8 hr, may double the dose in severe infections.
Spiramycin interactions
may, in some people, induce more or less troublesome effects: Digestive Effects: Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, occasionally requiring discontinuation of treatment. Allergic cutaneous reactions.
In order to avoid possible drug interaction, patient should always inform the doctor or pharmacist of any current treatment the patient is taking.

Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea; urticaria, pruritus, macular rashes. Transient paraesthesia may occur.
Potentially Fatal: Pseudomembranous colitis; anaphylaxis; neuromuscular blockade; ventricular arrhythmias, prolongation of QT interval.
