What is Nodiol?

Nodiol is used to prevent pregnancy. It is a birth control pill that contains a hormone, Nodiol, and when taken properly, prevents pregnancy.

Nodiol is also used to treat secondary amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods in women who have previously had a menstrual period who are not pregnant), endometriosis, and irregular menstrual periods caused by hormonal imbalance.

No contraceptive method is 100 percent effective. Birth control methods such as having surgery to become sterile or not having sex are more effective than birth control pills. Discuss your options for birth control with your doctor.

Nodiol does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases. It will not help as emergency contraception, such as after unprotected sexual contact.

Nodiol is available only with your doctor's prescription.

  1. Indications

Progestin-only oral contraceptives are indicated for the prevention of pregnancy.

  2. Efficacy

If used perfectly, the first-year failure rate for progestin-only oral contraceptives is 0.5%. However, the typical failure rate is estimated to be closer to 5%, due to late or omitted pills. Table 1 lists the pregnancy rates for users of all major methods of contraception.

Dosage form: tablet

The information at Drugs.com is not a substitute for medical advice. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Therapy with Nodiol must be adapted to the specific indications and therapeutic response of the individual patient.

Secondary amenorrhea, abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance in the absence of organic pathology

2.5 to 10 mg Nodiol may be given daily for 5 to 10 days to produce secretory transformation of an endometrium that has been adequately primed with either endogenous or exogenous estrogen.

Progestin withdrawal bleeding usually occurs within three to seven days after discontinuing Nodiol therapy. Patients with a past history of recurrent episodes of abnormal uterine bleeding may benefit from planned menstrual cycling with Nodiol.

Endometriosis

Initial daily dosage of 5 mg Nodiol for two weeks. Dosage should be increased by 2.5 mg per day every two weeks until 15 mg per day of Nodiol is reached. Therapy may be held at this level for six to nine months or until annoying breakthrough bleeding demands temporary termination.

The effectiveness of progestin-only pills is reduced by hepatic enzyme-inducing drugs such as the anticonvulsants phenytoin, carbamazepine, and barbiturates, and the antituberculosis drug rifampin. No significant interaction has been found with broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Herbal products containing St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) may induce hepatic enzymes (cytochrome P450) and p-glycoprotein transporter and may reduce the effectiveness of contraceptive steroids. This may also result in breakthrough bleeding.

Concurrent use of bosentan and Nodiol containing products may result in decreased concentrations of these contraceptive hormones thereby increasing the risk of unintended pregnancy and unscheduled bleeding.
