Kaogel indications
Used for upset stomach and diarrhea, a traditional medicine used in China, South America and Africa. Kaogel is also used to treat AIDs-related diarrhea. Kaogel based bandages are also under investigation. (Diaper rash;)
Kaogel description
Kaogel is a layered silicate mineral. Kaogel is used in ceramics, medicine, coated paper, as a food additive, in toothpaste, as a light diffusing material in white incandescent light bulbs, and in cosmetics. Until the early 1990s it was the active substance of anti-diarrhoea medicine Kaopectate.
Kaogel dosage
Oral
Diarrhoea
Adult: As adjunct to rehydration therapy: Up to 24 g daily may be used in divided doses. May be used in combination with other antidiarrhoeal agents.
Kaogel interactions
May reduce the absorption of a number of drugs (e.g. tetracycline, lincomycin, digoxin, aspirin, chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, phenothiazine).
Kaogel side effects
May cause electrolyte imbalance by increasing sodium and potassium loss in the stools, especially in elderly, children and in severe diarrhoea.
Kaogel contraindications
Intestinal obstruction, spastic bowel condition. Childn <6 yr.
